GCE 2026 Requirements Zambia: What You Need to Register
So you want to do GCE this year?
Maybe you wrote Grade 12 in 2024 but Maths let you down. Or you dropped out at Grade 9 and want to finish Grade 12 now. Either way, the first question is: Am I even allowed to register for GCE?
Short answer: Yes, most Zambians are. ECZ GCE is for anyone who wants to rewrite or complete school as an external candidate.
Here’s exactly what ECZ asks for in 2026.

Let’s Break It Down in Simple English
1. How old must you be for GCE 2026?
ECZ doesn’t say you must be 18. GCE is open to everyone.
But be real: Most centres won’t register a 14-year-old. If you’re under 16, go with a parent/guardian and explain why. If you’re 20, 30, 50… no problem. Lots of people do GCE as adults to get into UNZA, CBU, or college.
2. Do you need an NRC?
Yes. ECZ uses it to create your exam number.
Lost your NRC? Go to NAPSA or Home Affairs for a copy. In a hurry? Most centres accept a birth certificate + affidavit from a Commissioner of Oaths saying I lost my NRC.
Tip: Bring a clear photocopy, not the original.
3. Do you need a Grade 9 Certificate to do GCE Grade 12?
Ideally yes. ECZ prefers you have Grade 9 results before doing Grade 12 GCE.
What if I don’t have it? Many centres will still let you register as a new candidate with just your birth cert/NRC. But some strict centres in Lusaka will insist on Grade 9. Call the centre first to avoid wasting transport money.
4. Can I do GCE if I failed Grade 12 before?
100% yes. That’s what 80% of GCE candidates are doing. You only register for the subjects you failed or want to improve. Example: If you got D in Maths and 4 in Science, just register for those 2. You don’t redo all 8.
5. Can I do GCE without going to school?
Yes. GCE = External candidate. You study on your own, at home, tuition, or distance learning. You only go to the centre to register and to write exams in Oct/Nov.

3 Mistakes That Make People Fail to Register
- Going late: GCE registration closes around June-July. If you go in September, most centres will say
ECZ has closed. Start in April-May. - Wrong photos: WhatsApp-printed photos or selfies get rejected. Go to a photo shop and say
ECZ passport size. - Not asking about centre fees: ECZ charges K70/subject. But Centre A in Lusaka will add K50. Centre B will add K100. Ask on the phone first:
